Pertura Dammekos - Primarch of the Iron Warriors

The planet of Olympia was a high tech world, comprised of many large and industrialized city states engaged in nearly constant warfare, intrigues, and shifting alliances. Most inhabitants of Olympia were slaves, toiling away for the tyrants of the great houses which ruled the city states, going to war for their masters and serving them in their palaces. In Lochos, one of the more wealthy and powerful city states, the wife of the tyrant Dammekos gave birth to a girl child, named Pertura by her father. Pertura was brought up to be the perfect woman of Olympia, taught that the highest honor was to bear sons for her husband and to increase the prestige and wealth of her noble family. From a young age, she was taught poetry and music, how to dress and how to speak properly, to be the perfect wife and noble lady in this patriarchal world. She was also a genius, with intellect beyond that which any of her city had ever seen, and she put her mind towards being the best at what ever endeavor she undertook.

She also had another love that was a little less conventional for a noble lady, but was tolerated as part of the eccentricity that nobility sometimes display - technology. Pertura had a natural affinity for technology and science, a love of discovering how things worked, taking them apart, and putting them back together better than before. Her ability extended beyond even brilliance and creativity, it was supernatural in nature. Pertura had psychic abilities, subtle ones that allowed her to connect to machines and learn about them, even control them. It would not be until later in her life that she would learn the extent of her powers.

As with the other daughters of tyrants, Pertura was married to one of her father’s generals, helping to insure the general’s loyalty and expanding the family and its connections. As a dutiful daughter, Pertura married the general, though she barely knew him. With time, Pertura found her husband to be a brilliant man in his own right, a great military leader with an eye towards the future and an open mind. Though married for political reasons, the two fell deeply in love. What is more, the general recognized that his knew wife was special and allowed her to help him. He gave his wife access to vast resources of money and technology, letting her build new wonders and make scientific breakthroughs. With Pertura’s work, Lochos became the wealthiest and most advanced of the city states on Olympia.

Pertura also bore her husband many children and was a loving wife and mother, teaching her children the traditions of her people and raising them to have loyalty for the house of her husband and her father.

It was at the height of her happiness when a stranger came from off world to seek her out. This man was the Emperor, presumptive ruler of all of mankind. The Emperor told her of her special nature, one of his Primarchs, created to be one of his elite generals to help in retaking the galaxy for mankind. He said that she should give up life on this world, coming with him to command his armies. Pertura could not bear to leave her home, her husband, and her children though. She had a life for herself here, one that she loved, and the Emperor would not allow her to bring her husband or children along to command by her self. The Emperor was outraged by her refusal and left the planet, resolving to convince her to come by any means necessary.

Several months later when her life had mostly returned to normal, Pertura received a horrible psychic premonition, that something terrible would happen to her family. She returned home from a banquet of generals wives that she was attending. She arrived just in time for the massive explosion which consumed her children, father, and husband. Pertura herself was horribly damaged, burned over her entire body, blinded, and missing her limbs. It was days before they could recover her body from the wreckage and the medics were amazed that she had survived. They used all of their technical knowledge to restore her, creating a new body of metal and wires where flesh had once been. When she was eventually able to learn of the bomb that had killed her entire family, she went mad with grief. She craved revenge, it was all that she had left to live for.

It was during this time when she learned her true power over machines. Her new mechanical body seemed as much a part of her as her human body had been. It was as though she and the machine were one, she could focus her mind and enhance her cybernetic body far above and beyond the capacity that the scientists who restored her had ever dreamed. These new found powers meant nothing to her though, she only thought of finding the ones responsible for murdering her family.

The nobles and generals of Lochos were struggling among each other, each promising revenge but mostly interesting in becoming the new tyrant. Seeing their greed and avarice, Pertura slew many contenders for the throne in her terrible rage, taking the city for her own and demanding subservience from all the nobility. With Lochos under her command, she used the armies of the city state and the advanced technology she created to wage a war against all of her family’s old enemies. Millions were purged as any potential collaborator was slain.

When the smoke cleared, it was Lochos that stood triumphant over all other city states of Lochos, with Pertura as the first female tyrant, if she could even be called a female anymore. After being certain that she had taken her revenge, Pertura slipped in deep depression and considered destroying herself, with her family dead and world in ashes, she felt there was nothing more to live for. It was then that the Emperor returned. When he heard of the tragedy that had fallen Pertura, we wept for her, and promised to use all of his powers to find the killers. She told him that she believed she had already killed them and asked if the Emperor could find if this was true. Using all of his psychic might, the Emperor peered into the past, learning of the culprits, a rival faction that had been destroyed in the fighting. Perpura thanked him for easing her heart. The Emperor said that even with his great power, he could not restore the dead to life, but with Pertura’s help, he could create a safer and more peaceful galaxy where so many would not die by violence. Reluctantly, Pertura agreed to come with him, hoping that she could find some purpose in a new life, something that would make her life bearable.

In the service of the Emperor, Pertura was able to enhance her cybernetic body, taking all of the technology available to humanity and improving it with her own ability. With the help of the Adeptus Mechanicus, she received implants within her mind, enhancing her mental abilities even further and eliminating her emotional weakness. Pertura found the only way to ease the pain of the lose, cutting away that part of her mind that was capable of feeling sadness. With her increased focus and diminished sentimentality, she was among the Emperor’s most dedicated servants. Ruthlessly crushing foes, creating new weapons and technology, formulating strategies to defeat the enemies of the humanity.

As Pertura continued to create new technology and add to her body, she became more powerful in a number of ways. She created machines that interacted with her mind, strengthening her psychic potential, allowing her a variety of additional powers. Using the same ancient technology that allowed a ship to travel through the Warp, she was able to connect herself to the immaterium, gaining vast new insights and abilities. It was in one of her many experiments in gazing into the Warp, looking at far off places and distant times when she made a strange discovery. She looked back to her own past many years ago to see how her family had died, to see who was responsible. She found a psychic barrier around that place and point in time, one so powerful that even she could not break it. This greatly troubled her, for she only knew of a handful of psykers powerful enough to block clairvoyance in such a way.

She set all of her efforts to breaking this psychic barrier, constructing vast machines to amplify her psychic abilities, learning of dark and forbidden rituals which the Emperor has outlawed. Pertura connected herself to a vast network of these machines and used the energy of a world to empower her vision. This great undertaking did more than simply give her vision, it channels vast powers of the Warp into her soul and machine body, fusing all together in a conglomeration of Warp essence, mortal soul, and machine. She had become a daemon of Chaos, a daemon princess. As she became one with the Warp, she finally had the power to pierce the veil, the veil placed by the Emperor surrounding the murder of her family. It had been the Emperor who had had his assassins kill her family, he had arranged it all so that she would abandon her planet and serve him. Her emotions flared, she was filled with terrible rage. She prepared for war, amassing her forces to attack the Emperor and destroy him and all that he held dear. It was only then that she learned that during the time she had been creating her psychic machines, that several other Primarchs had joined with Chaos and declared war against the Emperor. She contacted Horus and pledged her service to him, promising to destroy the Emperor even if it meant her own destruction as well.
