I am thinking of doing a possible change for Jaghatai Khan now known as Esenjin (female version of 'good health' from Mongolian) to a woman while taking into account the deeper parts of the social aspects of the Mongol Empire that seems to be glossed over in the WH40K wiki (not sure if this is told in more depth in the WH40K novels, so I apologize if I am wrong). One of the deeper parts of the Mongolian Empire was that even though men were the dominant half, the men still turned to the women for advice in many matters from the political to the military.
While she does not lead, she is a very prominent and powerful advisor in her family, and eventually, her husband's council. In addition to this, unlike what the wiki states, her people do not mind leading an Empire which eventually leads to a frenzy of industrialization, to the point that there is a miniature, but thriving space faring empire after she marries. Because marriage is also a very important aspect of Mongol-esque society and she becomes the first wife of an heir to the leading tribe, thereby combining her own tribe with that of a much, bigger, and more powerful one.
Using her charisma and talent, she is able to become the 'power behind the throne' as it were and even arranges for several sister-wife marriages to her husband who is ruling only in name. Everyone in the know, publically praise her husband, but in secret, approach Esenjin as she is the true ruler. From her position, she can see from a more objective view as to who is the rising power and who is more easy to be preyed upon.
She is calculating and understands that her social position of apparent weakness in the public is actually a strength she can fully use as she has a number of sister-wives (who just so happen to be the first-born daughters of all the major tribal leaders) she can influence in keeping the various tribes in line with her husband's rule.
However, she eventually needs to bear a child to solidify the union between herself and her husband and does just that to which she is surprised and delighted when she has twins. One boy and one girl. The boy will be raised to be the next heir to the throne, while the girl is groomed to be a political tool in marriage to one of the few major tribes that resisted assimilation....for now.
Under her tutelage, her son grows to become heir to the throne, military genius, and silver-tongued diplomat and her daughter is known by the name of Jing Yi, a renowned dancer, top-tier musician, and (secretly) heiress to her mother's intelligence network.
One Hundredth and Third Entry from the Diary of Esenjin:
Before the horsemen taught me their sharp lessons and bled me dry of any weaknesses, I had a sister I dearly loved. Her name is...was Hoelun. I loved her well, but those days are gone. Like rain on the mountainside and wind through the meadow, they are long gone, much like what is left of my dearest sister now lies in my mother's tomb. Now, I have many sisters who both love and fear me. They are the wives of my husband Yesugei, but it is I who command our clan, our tribe.
I am the First Wife of the Khan. I am the true ruler of all I see. Those who had once opposed me either live with their ancestors or serve me.
I am Essenjin.
