Helvic Angron was born to a lower middle class family on the world of Nuceria. He was an exceptionally intelligent and introspective boy with a love of history, philosophy, and art. He longed some day to become a great writer or philosopher, though he had little patient for school and because of his parents’ lack of income, he could not afford a good education. When the planet was plunged into a vicious war with a rival in the system, Angron did his duty and enlisted. It was in war that Angron found his true calling. He was a soldier without peer, a master of all forms of combat and strategy, utterly fearless, and unwaveringly loyal. Angron gradually worked his way up the ranks, though before he could achieve a rank to make a real difference in the war, Nuceria surrendered to its enemies and being an obedient soldier, Angron accepted the terms with the rest of his brothers in arms.
In the aftermath of the war, Nuceria was plunged into economic ruin, with external factions and corrupt appointees making decisions and bleeding the planet dry, the people suffered and starved by the millions. Angron despaired, realizing that his side should have found to the end instead of surrendering like cowards. He began to look around and think about the world, reading more and formulating his own philosophies based upon what he saw. he realized that his once great people, the Nucerians, had become weak and debauched, that their ideologies had become degenerate and their mentality like that of slaves instead of warriors. He realized that the weak elements had to be purged from their society to make it healthy again. The leaches, the weaklings, the bureaucrats, the foreign exploiters. The world had to be cleansed in blood before it could grow strong once more. Angron knew that conflict was the way of all life, that through struggle the weak are weeded out and the strong allowed to flourish, and that victory was the only ultimate measure of worth.
Angron began to spread his philosophy among the people of Nuceria. First among his brothers in arms, soldiers who had fought and bleed next to him on the battlefield, men who new of Angron’s bravery and love of his people. From there he appealed to the starving masses, the poor and struggling, the exploited, the mothers who had lost their children. They were eager for the truth that Angron brought to them, eager to fight for a better world. Eventually Angron could gather together a large enough force to rise up against the occupiers of Nuceria and cast them off. When this happened, Angron became absolute ruler of Nuceria. Her would not stop at that though, he had greater ambitions.
As ruler of Nuceria he was able to make his message heard to all. Strength must be valued, struggle, aggression. All of existence was a great struggle and for a people to be great, as the Nucerians could be, they must embrace the unending conflict that is the essence of existence. The weak must be purged, the parasites, the cowards. The entire nature of Nucerian society was radically changed, oriented around the philosophy of the great leader Helvic Angron.
The surrounding planets of the system took notice of this aggressive new leader which had cast out their pawns. They knew that he was dangerous and that it was only a matter of time before he was able to build up the strength of Nuceria and seek revenge for their previous defeat. The surrounding system formed an alliance and declared war against Nuceria, demanding disarmament and for Angron to abdicate his office. Angron’s response was to immediately attack with the forces he had been building up, annihilating one of the most vulnerable planets in the alliance against him.
This time, the people of Nuceria had considerably more success. Angron was at the head of both the state and the army, his brilliant mind devising strategies to win almost every battle and to minimize the effects of the few loses they had. Angron devised new technologies of war, new tactics, new methods of fighting that his fanatical followers executed perfectly. The conquered were required to submit completely, the weakest among them being cleansed from the world, most becoming slaves, and the most useful being recruited. Conscripted soldiers who showed reluctance to fight or signs of cowardice or incompetence were equipped with a special device of Angron’s invention, the Butcher’s Nails, neuro-reactive implants hammered into a human’s brain, making them into fearless berserkers in combat. Angron had no hesitance in altering humanity in any way he could - accomplished men were allowed multiple wives and encouraged to have large families to spread their superior genes, failures were sterilized or even executed. Genetic engineering was used for even further benefit, along with cybernetic implants and combat drugs.
Eventually, Angron stood on the brink of victory over his foes, they were weakened and demoralized, crushed by his forces and pleading for peace. Angron would not relent, he demanded total surrender, demanded that the entire system be torn down and rebuilt according to his dreams of perfection. It was then that a highly advanced fleet of ships entered the system, this fleet carried the God Emperor of Mankind. The Emperor approached Angron, telling Angron of his special nature and offering him a place as one of his generals. Angron found the opportunity highly tempting, but wanted to finish crushing his foes before truly considering the offer. The Emperor had no time to wait, he ordered his fleet to open fire on Angron’s enemies and to crush them if they did not immediately surrender - which they did within the day. Angron felt that victory had been stolen from him, that he was on the verge of true victory one by the blood, sweat, and tears of he and his people. Though he also admired the Emperor’s style and knew that through service to this exceptional being that he might accomplish more than he ever could otherwise. Angron agreed to join the Emperor.
The Emperor said that humanity must claim the stars as their own and take them from the Xeno. This was music to Angron’s ears and he enthusiastically obeyed, taking countless worlds for the Emperor. It was only in time that Angron became to be disillusioned with the Emperor. The Emperor frowned upon Angron’s desire to purge the weak from among the human populations and was violently opposed to any wide spread genetic alteration to humanity, which Angron favored. Eventually, Angron learned of the Warp as he began to develop his own psychic abilities, and he learned of the great power there that the Emperor could embrace but feared to. Angron also was angry that it was Horus, a spoiled and selfish buffoon, was selected as Warmaster instead of himself or one of the other more competent Primarchs. As Angron became increasingly unhappy with the Emperor, another of the Primarchs approached him, his sister Aurelia, a Primarch who he had always thought to be a bit eccentric. She spoke to him of true strength and how humanity must transcend itself in order to achieve it. The ideas she spoke to him were intriguing, the two spoke more and more of this in the following years and he learned from her how to commune with the great forces beyond the materium, making contact with what would later become his patron - Khorne.
