Nostian Lexicon


 


Nostian Language : The Nostian language only has a single form of any particular word. This means that there are no plural versions of nouns and that sex specific nouns are extremely rare. Also, verbs are not conjugated and exist only in a single form despite how many people act or when they acted. To specify number and time, adjectives are used following the noun or verb they describe.

An example :
English : People saw dogs running
Nostian : Person (many) see (in the past) dog (many) run (currently)

The Nostilibra, the full formalized Nostian alphabet, has 392 characters. Many of these letters would seem superfluous, but each letter implies a slightly different emphasis, pronunciation, or accent. This means that when something is written in the formal Nostilibra that there is absolutely no doubt about how to read it. Because of the complexity of this alphabet, most Nostians don't completely know how to read and write it, but rather know an extremely simplified form called Nulnilib - Nuln's letters. The Nulnilib is known by most Nostians, its simple 33 letters make it a comparable alphabet to those of Indo-Europeans languages.
In the Nostian language poetry and calligraphy meet, since the written language is so expressive and there are so many letters of varying appearance. The greatest Nostian poets combine lyrical flow, meaning, tone and emphasis, and visual beauty of the combination of stylized letters.


Androcus : A combination doctor, biologist, and animal breeder. These people arrange marriages, keep records of the inheritable traits of Nostians, slaves, animals, and plants.

Androcus Megalos : A position appointed by the Vedrarchus, the head Androcus of Nostia. It his his job to set national policy for the breeding of slaves and animals, to monitor crop rotations, to make sure proper records are kept, and to insure that no Hecaris takes place between Nostians and conquered peoples.

Arculesa : A sex slave.

Atav : The huge river that is at the heart of Nostia.

Athavi : A slave race that have served the Nostians since the time of Tarnost the Great. The original inhabitants of the area in and around the Atav river basin.

Badax : Sex between animals, slaves, or Hecar. generally primarily for procreation or if not, then lacking in the sensuality and subtlety of true Nostian sex.

Baphis : Opium.

Carumos : A race, ethnicity, or tribe of people.

Carumos Vedre : The "master race" aka Nostians.

Cuelesa : Heterosexual sex between Nostian equals. Love and affection as well as procreation (of the superior Nostian race) is implied with this word. Neither partner is considered particularly dominant or submissive.

Culada : Heterosexual sex between a dominant male and a submissive and/or subservient female, often an Athavi sex slave, a Nuln, or one of much lower station.

Delpho : A soldier or mercenary, particularly a member of a Polidelphos.

Deucus : A ten day Nostian week.

Dorminus : The leader of a Polidelphos, elected by popular vote by nobles within that Polidelphos. A Dorminus has no official governmental position, but because of the military power at their disposal, their influence can often rival that of the Petrarchus.

D'Potri : An allied nation and people to the north of Nostia. Their primarily relationship with Nostia is that they capture slaves to sell to Nostians.

Drocolibrium : A huge library where Androcus keep records of genealogy and characteristics.

Drocolibrium Megalos : The greatest library within Nostia, in Tarnost city. It is said that all information ever recorded in Nostia resides in the Drocolibrium Megalos.

Garardum : The traditional afterlife believed in by Nostians of the past and even a few modern ones, called "the dungeon" it is a place of complete darkness and solitude where the deceased devours their own flesh for eternity.

Ephis : A Nostian fighting monkey. One of the most popular past times in Nostia is the breeding and fighting (usually to the death) of Ephis.

Hadrarum : The period between the fall of Omnitarum Dias and the formation of Omnitarum Vanus. A 384 year dark age when Nostia was not unified as a single country.

Harcu : A slave.

Hecar : A lesser race or member of a lesser race not affiliated with Nostians. This excludes the Athavi, Yetsheh, and D'Potri. It is usually used in a very derogatory manner, in much the same way as "nigger" might be in America.

Hecaris : Miscegenation, sex and reproduction between a Nostian and a Hecar, it is a great crime in Nostia.

Iharca : The policy of extermination and/or enslavement of Hecar races and eradication of their culture, genocide.

Iradium : An event in which prisoners are raped, tortured, and killed for the pleasure of spectators. Often this takes the form of torturing helpless captives or sometimes they fight in an almost gladiator-like way. Iradium can also refer to the stadium-like location in which the events are held. Sometimes an Iradium includes animal fighting as well, the most popular of which is Ephis fighting.

Isar : A horse.

Isardia : A horse race, usually done for entertainment, competitive, or gambling purposes.

Ki Nostia : Literally "of Nostia" and is the Nostian phrase for "Nostian." For convenience, the more English version "Nostian" is used to avoid confusion.

Kirax (Athavi) : The Athavi who escaped and became free after the fall of the Omnitarum Dias. They are considered to be the most inferior of all Athavi.

Lephira : 1. Freedom, commonly used to mean freedom from slavery. 2. The nation formed by free Kirax Athavi in the jungles to the north east of Nostia.

Librator : A Nostian tattoo artist, a highly esteemed profession which combines art, calligraphy, poetry, and heraldry. A Librator must have complete knowledge of the Nostilibra and the ability to perfectly place the letters onto human flesh.

Lulesa : Lesbian sexual activity.

Lorados : A soldier, particularly one in direct service of the Omnitas.

Madrana : A member of the Tomb Guard.

Madrananum : The Tomb Guard, protectors of the Madranos and of the Omnitas.

Madranos : The pyramid of Tarnost the Great.

Mercos : A hallucinogenic mushroom thought to create prophetic visions.

Merculos : A Nostian prophet.

Metrarcus : See Petrarcus.

Nostilibra : The full Nostian alphabet, officially consisting of 392 characters.

Nuln : This word once referred to anyone who was of mixed Nostian and non-Nostian ethnicity. In later centuries it refers to anyone who is a member of a race who is not Nostian, but more particularly non-Nostians allied with Nostians such as Athavi, Yetsheh, and D'Potri. It is often (but not usually) used in a derogatory fashion, especially if directed at one of the Yetsheh.

Nulnilib : The simplified version of the Nostian alphabet - Nostilibra for Nulns. It has 33 letters, 11 of which are vowels and 22 of which are consonants.

Ominus : The system of time measurement used in Nostia, dating back to when Tarnost Megalos became the first king of Nostia. The year that Omnitarum Vanus came into existance was Ominus 509 and the current year in Nostia is Ominus 967. To denote a date before Tarnost became king, one would say, Ominus Cu 200, or "two hundred years before rule".

Omnitarum : The Nostian empire. The original empire of Tarnost Megalos is often called the Omnitarum Dias, or the "First Empire". When the Empire was restored by Tarnost II, it became known as the Omnitarum Vanus, the "New Empire".

Omnitas : The Nostian emperor, appointed by the Vedrarcus.

Osteri : A small round polished crystal which is used as a standard measure for Nostian currency. One Osteri of currency is a copper coin of the exact weight of the Osteri stone.

Petrarcus : The leader of a Siratisa, ultimate controller of the family's land, army, and representative on the Vedrarcus. When a female takes this role she is called a Metrarcus.

Polidelphos : An organization of Nostian warriors who fight together, swear oaths of loyalty, and practice a similar fighting style. Usually members of a Polidelphos form a single unit or group of units on the battle field.

Ragasa : Homosexual sex between a dominant man and a submissive man, usually a slave.

Ragia : The castration of a male slave, animal, or prisoner.

Ragios : A male slave or animal who has been castrated.

Savorta : A system of hand to hand combat practiced by most Nostians as a sport, past time, and form of self-defense.

Siratisa : A Nostian noble family, inbred and descended from Tarnost Megalos and his daughters. There are seventeen such noble families, each of take their name from one of Tarnost's inbred daughters.

Tarnistum : The Nostian new year, a five day celebration involving wine, women, and song.

Tarnost : 1. Tarnost Megalos. 2. An additional name taken by every Omnitas of Nostia in addition to his given and family name. 3. The capital city of Nostia.

Tarnost Megalos : Tarnost the Great, founder of the Nostian empire and father of the Nostian people. To many he is revered as godlike or seen as the perfect man. The definition of a Nostian noble is one who can trace their lineage to Tarnost Megalos.

Therada : Literally to conquer, though the common usage of the word means to rape; to exert sexual dominance over another often involving violence, brutality, or sadism. This is the word is most often used to refer to the raping that takes place after Nostians have conquered a settlemen, along with it are implications of pillage, torture, murder, mutilation, and general cruelty.

Thornos : Torture and/or mutilation. Used as either a punishment, exert dominance over a defeated people, or for psychological warfare. This word can include anything as mild as a flogging to the cutting off of fingers or to unspeakable acts of sadism and depravity.

Tomb Guard : see Madrananum.

Uphios : Mercury, ingested by Nostians prophets to gain their prophetic abilities.

Vedrarchus : A council of all of the Petrarchus, one from each of the seventeen Siratisa. It forms to decide on important issues that face Nostia as a nation, including the appointment of the Omnitas and Androcus Megalos.

Vedrex : Master or mistress, the term which a slaves uses for its owner.

Yetsheh : A desert people who hail from the desert to the south of Nostia. They act as traders and merchants for Nostians in exchange for military aid. Female Yetsheh are allowed to marry male Nostians and bare children with them, this is the one exception when breeding between a Nostian and another race isn't considered Hecaris.
